Santa Anita Race Track

Landscape Architect: EDAW

General Contractor: Shaw & Sons

Widely acclaimed as one of the most beautiful settings for racing found anywhere, Santa Anita Park is the “Great Race Place.” Situated on 305 acres of land approximately 14 miles northeast of Los Angeles, Santa Anita first opened for thoroughbred horse racing in 1934. Famed for its art-deco style grandstand and view of the San Gabriel Mountains, Santa Anita features a one-mile oval dirt track and a seven-eighth-mile turf course.

At the urgent request of the track’s management, Shaw & Sons constructed the entire track terraces, including footings, walls, plinths, stairs, trough drains, the winner circle structure, and stamped integral color hardscape in only five and a half weeks. The job was done on-time and on-budget in preparation for the opening of the track’s racing season.
